Anthony Anderson on Using Comedy and Technology to Tackle Diabetes
The star of Black-ish opens up about his diabetes journey and shares how laughter—and a little technology—can go a long way.

I caught up with actor and comedian Anthony Anderson at the ADA Scientific Sessions in Chicago for a candid conversation about living with type 2 diabetes. Best known for his Emmy-nominated role as Dre Johnson on Black-ish and his performance in Kangaroo Jack (a personal favorite), Anthony opened up about how comedy became his way of connecting, educating, and empowering others living with the condition.
In the interview, I ask Anthony how he uses humor to break down barriers, create community, and help people tackle their diabetes. We also dive into the power of technology—how CGMs and connected health tools have made a real difference in his care—and how we need to treat our health tech with the same enthusiasm we give to our latest phone or smart gadget.
Listen to the full interview at the top of this article. Then watch the Black-ish clip below which is a prime example of how Anderson has used humor to make these larger and complex topics more digestible.
