I sat down with T1D content creator Rob Howe from Diabetic Doing Things to get a real-world look at his experience using the Medtronic MiniMed 780G system—and the community he’s building around it.
The MiniMed 780G is an insulin delivery system featuring SmartGuard technology, which makes insulin adjustments every 5 minutes. Its standout Meal Detection feature can sense missed or underestimated carb boluses and deliver correction doses automatically. This advanced algorithm helps Rob Howe stay in range even when his carb math isn’t perfect.
Using the Guardian 4 CGM, the 780G works around the clock to monitor his glucose levels without finger sticks. It also supports glucose targets as low as 100 mg/dL for tighter control—one of the lowest out of all the U.S insulin pumps.
Rob shares how this system feels in day-to-day life—less micromanagement, fewer highs and lows, and more time for other things. He even took a pump break before switching back to 780G, and explains why it stood out enough to stay.
I loved hearing Rob’s perspective—about the pump, the freedom it brings, and how he’s creating community around this tech. If you want to hear about the real-life ups, downs, and surprises of the 780G, check out the full episode below or listen at the top.
