In the not-so-distant future, someone living with diabetes might start their day with a conversation with an AI companion—“How did my glucose levels look after dinner last night?” they might ask. The AI would scan their CGM data, identify the meal, and offer a summary: “You spiked 20 mg/dL higher than usual—likely due to that extra slice of sourdough. Next time, try pairing it with more protein.” Wearing their AI glasses at breakfast, they share a photo of their plate and ask, “What’s the estimated carb count here?” The AI not only calculates it based on past meals and portion size, but also shares': “Last time you ate this, you went low soon after, so I reduced the estimated carb count for you.” This isn’t science fiction. It’s the future being built now.
For people with diabetes, carb counting has long been one of the hardest, most error-prone aspects of daily management. But AI is opening new doors—starting with how we log and learn from food. Just recently, Dexcom launched a Smart Food Log in its G7 app, allowing users to take a photo of their meal. The system identifies and categorizes the food items, laying the groundwork for future glucose prediction and analysis. While the feature is still in its early stages—it doesn’t yet estimate carbs or tie into glucose trends—it marks a major step forward for a company best known for its CGMs.
Meanwhile, the SNAQ app is already offering a more advanced experience. It lets users log meals through photos, voice, or text and uses AI to estimate carbs and connect meals with glucose responses. It also learns over time, offering personalized suggestions to improve post-meal outcomes and integrating with wearables like Apple Watch and Oura Ring. For those looking for smarter insights and less guesswork, SNAQ is one of the most promising tools available today.
In this week’s episode of Diabetech, I sat down with Aurelian Briner, CEO and co-founder of SNAQ, to talk about how AI is reshaping food logging and where diabetes management is headed. We dive into how SNAQ works, Dexcom’s new Smart Food Log, and the bigger vision of AI companions supporting people with diabetes.
