When I first learned about Inreda’s dual-hormone system, I knew I had to see it for myself. The idea of a true artificial pancreas — one that automatically delivers both insulin and glucagon — feels like the future of diabetes technology finally catching up to what people have dreamed about for years.
Inreda’s system is designed to take over the heavy lifting of diabetes management. There’s no manual bolusing, carb counting, or preemptive adjustments before workouts. Instead, the device continuously measures glucose levels and uses a smart algorithm to decide when to deliver insulin or glucagon, maintaining balance in real time.
I sat down with Inreda’s founder and CEO, Robin Koops, to talk about the journey behind this innovation. He shared how Inreda’s concept began as a personal project over two decades ago and evolved into a medically approved system now being used by more than 80 people in clinical trials across Europe. What makes this technology so different is how the algorithm continuously adapts — learning from your glucose data and responding to highs and lows as they happen.
The pump setup includes two hormone cartridges, two infusion sets, and a sensor connected to an app that tracks and manages everything automatically. The dual-hormone approach, using both insulin and glucagon, allows it to counteract potential hypoglycemia proactively — something single-hormone systems still struggle with.
Early clinical results have been promising, showing users spending more time in range with fewer interventions. What’s even more exciting is that users describe it as life-changing — not because it’s perfect yet, but because it gives them something priceless: freedom. Freedom from micromanaging every meal, every activity, every number.
Of course, the big question remains — when will this reach more people? Koops mentioned that future development and regulatory approvals are already underway, with hopes to bring this to broader markets soon.
If you’ve ever wondered what fully automated diabetes management might look like — this is it. It’s not science fiction anymore; it’s here, being tested, refined, and improved every single day.
