I recently sat down with John Sjolund, CEO of Luna Diabetes, to discuss how this new approach to automated insulin delivery could transform diabetes care. Unlike traditional pumps that run 24/7, Luna is designed to automate insulin while you sleep, helping users wake up with stable glucose levels—no alarms, no midnight corrections, and no tubing.

What makes Luna especially interesting is its target audience. It’s primarily built for MDI (multiple daily injection) users who may not want to switch to a full-time pump but still want the benefits of automation. However, even experienced pumpers could find it useful for nighttime optimization or backup management.

The pump’s semi-reusable design also helps reduce waste and cost, while its smart algorithm continuously monitors glucose levels to predict and adjust insulin delivery before highs or lows happen. Luna’s early trial data has shown promising results, with consistent overnight control and improved time in range.

Now advancing through into pivotal trials and with a recent Series A funding of $23.6 million, Luna could introduce an entirely new category in diabetes tech—one that complements, rather than replaces, current insulin injections.
