It’s hard to believe how far diabetes technology has evolved. Not too long ago, insulin pump tech was the size of a backpack, management required manual blood glucose checks, and constant vigilance. Today, we’re standing on the edge of fully automated insulin delivery systems — the kind of technology that once felt impossible.

During my visit to Medtronic’s headquarters in Los Angeles, I had the chance to dive into this incredible journey with Ali Dianaty, Medtronic’s SVP of Product Innovation and Operations. Together, we traced the story of how diabetes tech went from clunky prototypes to life-changing innovations.

We started by looking back at the early blood glucose meters, which were big, slow, and often unreliable. Then came the insulin pump, a device that was and not yet mobile. Despite its size, pumps represented a future of freedom — to gave people with diabetes a level of flexibility they had never had before.

From there, innovation picked up speed. The AutoSyringe pump helped bring insulin delivery into a more compact and wearable form. Later, Medtronic introduced one of the most fascinating developments in the field — the implantable insulin pump. It was a bold step forward, one that demonstrated the potential of merging medical technology directly with the human body to simplify life with diabetes.

Of course, no evolution would be complete without the first continuous glucose monitors (CGMs). They revolutionized the way people understood their blood sugar, offering real-time insights and trends instead of isolated data points. These sensors laid the groundwork for what we now know as automated insulin delivery (AID) systems, where insulin dosing can respond dynamically to CGM readings.

The result of all these innovations? Systems that can predict, adjust, and automate — essentially replicating the functions of a healthy pancreas.

The story of diabetes technology isn’t just about devices. It’s about persistence, collaboration, and the relentless pursuit of better quality of life. Each milestone built upon the last, leading us closer to a future where managing diabetes feels effortless and seamless.
