ViCentra has announced commercial rollout of its smartphone-controlled Kaleido hybrid closed-loop pump to people with diabetes in Europe. The platform combines the Kaleido pump with an updated DBLG2 algorithm and the Dexcom G7 continuous glucose monitor (CGM) into one connected system.

Kaleido is a small, colorful hybrid-patch pump that adheres to the body with an adhesive and delivers insulin through a short tube to a nearby infusion site, similar to Tandem Mobi. Unlike disposable patch pumps, it is rechargeable. The pump also includes features such as blockage detection and a micro-pumping chamber, with infusion sets typically changed every three days.

The updated Kaleido is controlled from a smartphone app available on Android devices with an iOS version coming soon—no longer requiring a separate controller. With the DBLG2 algorithm, meal announcements are not necessary, but if entered will help with glucose control.

The system continues to have unique features from the prior DBLG1 algorithm, like Zen Mode, which allows users to temporarily raise glucose targets to avoid hypoglycemia and alerts. This is designed for events where users don’t want frequent alerts like during a movie. ViCentra says the goal is to reduce the day-to-day workload of diabetes care while adapting to individual patterns over time, without requiring users to announce every meal.

The first commercial markets will be Germany and the Netherlands, with initial shipments expected this summer. ViCentra is also presenting the system this week at the 60th DDG Diabetes Congress in Berlin.
