The Kaleido insulin pump is redefining what an Automated Insulin Delivery (AID) system can be—combining advanced technology with a sleek, modern design. Longtime pump user Nina Joakim (@DiaBadass_Nina), who spent 17 years with Medtronic systems before exploring other AID options, calls Kaleido the most stylish and flexible pump she’s ever used.

Compact and modular—about the size of an AirPods Pro case—Kaleido gives users options for how to wear it. It can be worn directly on the skin with short tubing or carried in a pocket with longer tubing and holds up to 200 units of insulin. Its next generation pump, Kaleido 2 has a 10% smaller design, USB-C charging, and an accelerometer built-in, which could potentially be used to track physical activity.

Kaleido 2 is 10% smaller than its predecessor, Kaleido.

Kaleido isn’t just about looks. Underneath its colorful, compact design is serious functionality. At its core is the Diabeloop DBLG1 hybrid closed-loop algorithm, which integrates seamlessly with the Dexcom G6 continuous glucose monitor (CGM) to automate insulin delivery in real time. Smartphone control and Dexcom G7 support are rolling out soon in Germany and the Netherlands, powered by the updated DBLG2 algorithm.

What sets Kaleido apart are its customizable features. The pump offers specific profiles for workouts, helping fine-tune insulin delivery during physical activity. It also includes meal logging tools for high-fat foods to help tackle delayed glucose spikes that other systems often miss. The algorithm adds extra flexibility with options like Zen Mode for temporary higher glucose targets and Rescue Carb Recommendations for preventing lows.

For Nina, the switch to Kaleido was about finding a pump that fit her lifestyle while offering real customization. For the wider diabetes community, it represents a refreshing balance of style, adaptability, and advanced AID performance.

I spoke with Nina about what it’s like using Kaleido in action, how it works, and why she continues to use it. Check out the full podcast in video below or listen at the top of this page.
