Trio, an open-source automated insulin delivery (AID) system built by and for people with diabetes, has officially launched version 1.0. After more than two years of development, the latest release brings a redesigned app, expanded pump and CGM integrations, expanded alerts and glucose forecasting, and a number of changes designed to make the system more user-friendly and more flexible.

Unlike FDA-cleared AID systems, Trio is open source, meaning the code behind the app and algorithm is publicly available. The system is developed collaboratively by people with diabetes, developers, and contributors who donate their time to improve it.

We spoke with Trio contributors Theresa Hastings and Magnus Reintz about the update as well as their own experiences with Trio, including approaches that allow them to rarely enter carbohydrates or interact with the app day-to-day. Instead they let the algorithm independently handle much of their insulin dosing. The episode explores what makes Trio different from other AID systems, including the level of customization available within its algorithm.
