Type 3C diabetes rarely makes headlines, but it is a real and under-recognized form of the condition. Unlike type 1, which is autoimmune, or type 2, which is driven by insulin resistance, type 3c develops after direct damage to the pancreas. This damage often comes from pancreatitis, abdominal surgery, gallstones, or physical trauma, resulting in loss of both insulin-producing and digestive functions.

Many people only discover type 3c after months or years of unexplained abdominal pain, fatigue, or digestive trouble. Symptoms can be misattributed to acid reflux or routine stomach illness. By the time the diagnosis is made, the pancreas is frequently severely compromised, requiring patients to rethink daily routines, manage blood sugar, and address digestive needs at the same time.

On the latest Diabetech podcast, I sat down with Ivan Werning, who shares his firsthand experience from severe pancreatitis and hospitalization to adjusting to new routines. We discuss what its like living with type 3c and how insulin therapy compares to type 1 and type 2, why he takes enzyme supplements to aid with digestion and how technology like the CeQur Simplicity insulin patch is helping him manage diabetes. integrating modern diabetes technology.
