Abbott has issued a medical device correction for certain FreeStyle Libre 3 and Libre 3 Plus sensors in the U.S. after internal testing showed some units could deliver incorrect low glucose readings. The issue was traced to one production line and Abbott reports the problem has been fixed.

About 3 million sensors are included, with roughly half already used or expired. Globally, Abbott has logged 736 severe adverse events linked to the issue, including 57 in the U.S., along with seven deaths reported outside the country. No other Libre products, readers, or apps are affected.

If you use a Libre 3 or Libre 3 Plus, you can check your sensors here to see if they are affected. Users with affected sensors can request free replacements, and anyone currently wearing an impacted sensor should stop using it immediately. Until your replacement arrives, confirm questionable readings with a fingerstick or the Libre 3 reader’s built-in meter.

Dexcom has also dealt with recent G7 sensor concerns and is preparing to release a 15 day version soon. With accuracy issues surfacing across multiple manufacturers, the question becomes unavoidable. How much trust can we really place in today’s CGMs, and what needs to evolve for these devices to meet the reliability that people with type 1 diabetes depend on every single day? Let us know what you think in the comments.
