Medtronic—soon to rebrand as MiniMed—has officially launched its new Instinct continuous glucose monitor (CGM) for use with the MiniMed 780G insulin pump. Announced today on the company’s social media channels, the sensor is now available to order directly from the Medtronic website in the United States.
The Instinct CGM is manufactured by Abbott and closely resembles the Libre 3 Plus sensor. It lasts 15 days, with a warmup time of 60 minutes—just like Libre 3 Plus. Instinct joins two other compatible CGMs for the 780G—the Guardian 4 and Simplera. This new CGM pairing is an important milestone for Medtronic’s automation ecosystem and comes as the company pushes toward its next generation of insulin pumps and CGMs.

Some users in the U.S. have already been using Simplera, though early feedback suggests some are preparing to switch to Instinct now that it’s officially available. Simplera’s production has faced setbacks, while Instinct may scale more quickly given that Abbott is overseeing manufacturing. That difference could allow Instinct to reach users faster than Simplera.
There are still open questions about the new system. Medtronic has not yet confirmed whether Instinct will eventually integrate with the InPen smart insulin pen for multiple daily injection users. It’s also unclear whether Abbott’s or Medtronic’s algorithm is driving the sensor’s algorithm, and no timeline has been announced for availability outside of the U.S.
For now, this launch means MiniMed 780G pump users in the United States have access to a new CGM option with 15-day wear, faster warmup, and direct integration into automated insulin delivery. We’ll continue following updates on InPen compatibility, international rollout, and how Instinct fits into Medtronic’s evolving lineup of diabetes technologies.
