The next-generation MiniMed Flex insulin pump is finally making its way into the hands of people living with type 1 diabetes. With a sleek form factor, app-controlled, waterproof construction, and the same SmartGuard algorithm found in the MiniMed 780G, the Flex promises a more modern experience.
In this conversation, we spoke with two early Flex users about their transition from previous systems to the new device. Kris Leeper made the jump from the MiniMed 780G, while Laura Gill shares the perspective of a parent whose son has tried multiple automated insulin delivery (AID) systems, including Tandem and Omnipod. Together, they discuss what surprised them most about the new pump, how the app-controlled experience compares to traditional pump interfaces, and whether the smaller design makes a meaningful difference during everyday activities and sports. We also touch on continuous glucose monitor (CGM) compatibility. MiniMed Flex is currently only compatible with the Simplera Sync sensors, but MiniMed plans to make Flex compatible with the 15-day Instinct sensor as well
The podcast also dives into one of the algorithm’s standout features: how well MiniMed's Meal Detection technology works when carbs are underestimated or a bolus is delayed. As other AID systems, including the upcoming Omnipod 6, introduce missed-bolus support, MiniMed is developing a new fully-closed loop algorithm, Vivera. This algorithm will make meal announcements optional for users, reducing day-to-day interactions with the pump. MiniMed’s Chief Technology Officer recently came on the podcast to discuss MiniMed Flex, the upcoming Vivera algorithm, and MiniMed’s first tubeless pump MiniMed Fit.
For the first time, this episode includes a post-show discussion between Diabetech producers Justin Eastzer and Jenna Woolf breaking down our guests’ feedback, comparing the Flex to other systems, and exploring where MiniMed's technology appears to be heading next. Future versions of these segments will be available for All Access members.
