When it comes to managing diabetes, DIY (Do-It-Yourself) apps like Loop, Trio, and AndroidAPS (AAPS) are taking innovation into their own hands—literally. These open-source systems give users more flexibility, control, and customization than most commercial options.

In our latest podcast episode, we compared the key features and differences between the three most popular DIY apps to help you find which one fits your lifestyle and comfort level.

Loop: Polished and iOS-Friendly

Loop has been one of the most well-known DIY systems for years. It uses a robust algorithm to automatically adjust insulin delivery based on continuous glucose monitor (CGM) data, giving users near real-time glucose management.

One of the standout features of Loop is its Caregiver and Follow app—allowing parents, partners, or caregivers to view glucose levels remotely. iPhone users will also appreciate the Siri Shortcuts integration, making it easy to check stats or bolus with just your voice.

Trio: A Newcomer Built for Simplicity

Trio is a newer open-source system, designed to simplify what has traditionally been a complex DIY process. The app runs on iOS and features many more controls and settings than Loop.

Most notably, Trio’s algoirthm is dynamic—it adjusts with changes in its user to better control glucose with its Dynamic ISF, super-micro boluses (SMBs), and Unannounced Meal technology.

AndroidAPS (AAPS): Power and Flexibility for Advanced Users

If you’re an Android user and love deep customization, AndroidAPS might be your go-to. It uses the same algorithm as Trio. It’s known for giving users full control over nearly every parameter — from basal rates and correction factors to automation thresholds.

That flexibility, however, comes with complexity. Setting it up requires time, patience, and technical knowledge. But for people who want granular data and maximum control, AAPS is incredibly powerful.

Choosing the Right DIY App

The “best” DIY app really depends on what you value most.

  • If you want an Apple-integrated, family-friendly experience, Loop stands out.

  • If you’re looking for more control and dynamic settings on iOS, Trio is the one.

  • If you own an Android phone, AAPS is the algorithm that works best.

No matter which you choose, these DIY projects highlight how far community-driven innovation has come in diabetes management — and how users continue to push technology forward faster than most commercial companies.
