The Diabetes Patient Advocacy Coalition is bringing awareness to a new formulary update beginning January 1, 2027, where some CVS Caremark and Aetna customers may face changes to which continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) are covered. Affected pharmacy-benefit plans will no longer cover Dexcom G6 sensors, receivers, and transmitters; Dexcom G7 10-day sensors and receivers; or Dexcom G7 15-day sensors. This formulary update makes the FreeStyle Libre CGM the covered option, potentially requiring Dexcom users to switch devices or explore other coverage options. The changes will vary by employer, health plan, and benefit design.

Switching devices may mean learning a new system, changing apps, or potentially disrupting an established diabetes management routine. Some people may be able to continue accessing Dexcom through their medical benefit or a durable medical equipment (DME) supplier, though coverage is not guaranteed and depends on the individual plan. Dexcom says current coverage remains in place through December 31, 2026, and encourages members to confirm their 2027 benefits before making any changes.

The Diabetes Patient Advocacy Coalition (DPAC) is asking people to contact CVS Caremark and Aetna and urge them to protect uninterrupted access to CGM technology without forcing non-medical switches. Take action by writing to CVS Caremark and Aetna through DPAC’s campaign.
