A cure for type 1 diabetes remains one of the main focuses in diabetes research, but what would a cure actually need to look like? In part-two of our ‘What is a Cure?’ podcast, the experts return and we explore the promise and limitations of islet and beta cell replacement and why some of the first advanced therapies may not represent the “one-and-done” cure many people imagine. They also discuss the potential role of smart insulin, advanced automated insulin delivery systems, and other technologies that could continue reducing the burden of managing type 1 diabetes even if they don't eliminate the condition entirely.
In Part one of this conversation, Dr. Kent Jensen, Dr. Michael J. Haller, and Dr. Rayhan A. Lal join us to discuss the science behind preventing and delaying type 1 diabetes, replacing insulin-producing beta cells, and why the path toward a cure has taken so long. But developing a therapy that can restore insulin production is only part of the challenge.
