Following Dexcom’s release of its Customer Advisory Council report, we spoke with CEO Jake Leach and CTO Peter Simpson about the key issues council members identified and how Dexcom plans to correct them and regain trust within the diabetes community. Improving product quality and more transparency about ongoing improvements were two major takeaways from the report.

The Dexcom G7 has algorithm updates rolling out across both the 10-day and 15-day variants that will make glucose data more accurate and the display smoother graphs. Dexcom is also developing new antenna technology to help strengthen Bluetooth connectivity across the body. Another consistent issue raised by the council was adhesive. Dexcom G7 sensors will soon utilize a new, stronger adhesive which will help users get the full 10 or 15-day wear-time out of their devices.

Looking ahead, at its recent Investor Day, Dexcom confirmed the G8 will be approximately 50% smaller than the G7 and will set 15-day wear as the new standard for users of all ages. The next-gen sensor will include self-adapting technology that is two decades in the making.

Dexcom is also developing a multi-analyte sensor that reads potassium in addition to glucose levels. Tracking this second biomarker could help prevent hyperkalemia, or high levels of potassium in the blood and currently, there is no at-home test for potassium levels. Dexcom’s competitor, Abbot, has its own multi-analyte sensor that measures ketones and glucose headed to Europe later this year called Libre Duo.
