Abbott’s Libre Duo 10-day is set to bring continuous glucose and ketone monitoring to the U.S. for the first time. Libre Duo measures both glucose and ketones from the same interstitial fluid, and uses the existing Libre app. The new sensor is designed to help prevent the growing number of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) cases (according to Abbott there has been a 55% rise in the last decade). Libre Duo will work with the existing Libre app to display glucose levels, and only display ketone levels and ketone alerts when levels are out of range.

The alerts are customizable, just like the Libre 3 Plus, but a big upgrade comes with bluetooth connectivity. Libre Duo will be Abbott's first sensor capable of connecting to two devices simultaneously—allowing users to connect to both the Libre app and an insulin pump at the same time.

Abbott expects compatibility with Beta Bionics and Sequel shortly after launch, with Insulet and Tandem planned for 2027. The company is also working with MiniMed on a version designed to work with its automated insulin delivery systems.

We spoke with Abbott Diabetes Care’s Vice President of Technical Operations, Marc Taub, and Senior Medical Director, Dr. Alisa Schiffman, to learn about the sensor and the new features coming soon. The 10-day sensor is expected to become available in the U.S. later this year, but a 15-day version of the sensor received CE Mark authorization for European markets earlier this summer.
