Insulet is launching a new algorithm on Omnipod 5 with enhanced features, the primary being a lower target glucose. The target has expanded its lowest target to 100 mg/dL compared to the 110 mg/dL Omnipod 5 has been using up until now. Users can set target in 10 mg/dL increments between 100 and 150 mg/dL. This update gives Omnipod users and clinicians the ability to tailer insulin therapy to each user’s needs.

The new update brings compatibility for the Libre 3 Plus continuous glucose monitor (CGM). For the first time, Omnipod 5 users can use the most up to date version of the Libre sensor. Notably, Libre 3 Plus integration is only supported on the Omnipod 5 controller and does not connect to the Omnipod smartphone app.

The algorithm has been tested in a limited release, our own Justin Easter was part of! In addition to the new target glucose, it was designed to increase time in Automated Mode with fewer interruptions. Keep an eye out for more hands-on feedback from Justin in the coming weeks. In the meantime, Omnipod will be sending updates to smartphone apps and controllers within the next few days, so keep an eye out!

While this app update has been a long-time coming for Ominpod 5 users, Insulet’s next-gen pump, Omnipod 6 is currently in development and promises an enhanced algorithm and a single universal pod instead of separate versions for different CGMs. Omnipod is also in the midst of EVOLVE, a pivotal study testing a fully closed-loop automated insulin delivery (AID) system for adults with type 2 diabetes.

Will you use the new lower target glucose? Will you change your target based on activity levels? Let us know in the comments!
