The tubeless pump landscape is shifting quickly, and Insulet has finally given a clearer look at its next major release. At a recent investor day event, the company outlined updates coming to Omnipod 5 in 2026, a ‘Discover’ insights platform, and previewed the features planned for Omnipod 6.

Omnipod 6 is designed for people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes who use bolus insulin. While the pod’s physical design remains unchanged, the system introduces several meaningful improvements. The core upgrade is a more advanced algorithm that learns from each user’s insulin needs and targets tighter glucose control. Insulet plans to lower the lowest target of Omnipod 5 to 100 mg/dL, an enhancement expected to carry forward to the upgraded pump.

The company also says Omnipod 6 will keep users in automated mode more consistently. Although details are limited, this suggests more flexibility within automation, similar to what competing systems already offer. Alongside the algorithm update, Insulet is developing a new app and controller aimed at simplifying training and daily operation.

One universal pod for Dexcom, Libre, and future CGMs.

One of the most notable hardware-related changes is the move to a single universal pod. Instead of separate versions for different CGMs, Omnipod 6 will support Dexcom, Libre, and future sensors with one pod type. Insulet expects this to accelerate product updates by about six to nine months.

What isn’t changing: the form factor. It’s expected to remain a 200-unit reservoir, have three day wear time, and be the same shape and size. A greater redesign is planned for beyond 2028. Those longer-term efforts include a new pod design, extended wear time, increased insulin capacity, and fully closed-loop algorithms for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Insulet aims to begin clinical studies and pursue 510(k) clearance in 2026, with launch targeted for 2027. Given the growing field of tubeless competitors from Tandem, Medtronic, and Beta Bionics, Omnipod 6 enters a space that is more active and crowded than ever.
